14. Baby bonding - The Delivery, 6x17

Top 20 Jim and Pam Moments

After struggling to get the baby to breast feed, when Pam’s alone with baby Cece outside the hospital waiting for Jim to bring the car round, she finally does it! Pam’s fears about her new role as a parent seem to ease. Seeing the girls settled on the hospital bench, Jim comes to sit beside Pam and smiles proudly at Pam and Cece.

This whole episode was a dreamy kind of perfection but this scene, even over the “it’s a girl!” scene, has to be my favourite of the episode. It’s the most hopeful ending. We’ve seen them struggle, frazzled as they very exhaustedly care for their daughter. As a viewer, you know they are going to be such great parents - I mean, we know these characters by now. But, they seem to lose faith in themselves for a little while, particularly Pam. So when she finally succeeds with the breast feeding, you just know. You just know everything’s going to be alright.

It’s also nice to just have a moment that’s so intimate. There’s no doctors and nurses, no Michael, no Isabel. It’s just Pam and Cece to begin with, and then daddy interrupts. It’s one of those times on the show where you genuinely feel like you’re intruding on a moment. I feel like it’s the moment they become a family. It’s a happy ending kind of moment.

When Pam quietly says, “We did it”, the moment is complete. The pride in Jim’s face is gorgeous as well. I do love Jim. Lots.

15. “You didn’t fail.” - China, 7x10

Top 20 Jim and Pam Moments

Jim and Pam are out in the stairwell, as Pam confesses she lied to Dwight about the new offices. She explains that she didn’t want to fail at the office administrator job like she failed at arts school and sales. Jim appears taken aback as he insists she didn’t fail, to which she replies, “Well, I’m not an artist and I’m not a salesman. So what would you call it?”

This scene came out of nowhere. I wasn’t expecting such a heartfelt scene because their story in this episode was centred around Pam and Dwight. I just think it’s another understated and beautiful scene in which both Jenna and John act so, so well. I always get a bit jealous when John’s got a hug scene, because his hugs look so nice.

I also think it’s a really interesting thread to see Pam’s frustrated ambition. I think, in that respect, she’s very much the opposite to Jim in that his contentment can also be perceived as complacent. Pam always knows she can do better, and be better. Whilst she does have a certain amount of drive that Jim lacks, she has still been known to stall. They have made sacrifices for each other - giving up the promotion, as with Jim, or “coming back the wrong way” from art school, in Pam’s case. I feel like this is the opposite, it’s their marriage providing a foundation for them to be ambitious and fulfilled.

As a viewer I feel really supportive of Pam when she’s empowered and I really will her on with the office administrator position. This scene is the cuddle I would give her through my TV screen. And, it’s amazing what a difference a tiny kiss on the cheek makes! Perfect husband lessons continue right here.
